I’ll admit it—I’m a tech junkie. My smartphone is practically glued to my hand, and I often wonder if I’m spending too much time on it. So, after reading about the benefits of digital detox, I decided to take the plunge: I switched to a flip phone for a whole week. No social media, no endless scrolling, just calls and texts. Here’s what I learned.

The Initial Shock

On day one, I was hit with the realisation of just how reliant I’d become on my smartphone. No checking emails in bed, no quick Google searches to solve problems, and definitely no distractions. At first, it felt like a serious step backward, but I quickly adjusted.

Productivity Boost

Without the constant ping of notifications, I found I was getting more done. Without the mindless scrolling, I had more time for work, reading, and actual face-to-face conversations. It wasn’t just the work tasks either; I felt more present in everything I did. Even my morning routine felt less rushed.

The Social Experiment

One of the biggest challenges was staying connected. People don’t call anymore—they text, DM, or message on WhatsApp. I felt disconnected at times, but it forced me to engage more intentionally when I did communicate. It was actually refreshing not to be available 24/7.

The Downsides

The obvious downside? No access to apps, maps, or a camera. If I needed to check something quickly, I had to do it the old-fashioned way—ask someone or look it up on a computer. Also, I missed having a camera on me at all times. There’s something about capturing moments instantly that a flip phone just doesn’t do.

The Verdict

Would I switch to a flip phone full-time? Probably not. But this experiment made me realise how much time I waste on my smartphone. It’s easy to get caught up in the digital noise, and for me, switching to a flip phone was a wake-up call. I’m now more mindful about how and when I use technology.

So, would I recommend it? If you feel like your smartphone is taking over your life, it might be worth trying for a week. It might just help you rediscover a more balanced, focused way of living.
